Community Development Program

On the 4th of October 2024, the South African Police Service hosted  a community development project at Soshanguve Jukulyn, with the aim of empowering the youth and to learn them about different career paths they wish to take in the future.

The event featured different department, such as the department of home affairs, Tshwane Metro Police Service, Local Councilor, Community Patrollers, Crime Prevention Warden, Gender Based Violence Brigade, Community Policing Forum, Voice of Africa and other various department that was assisting the youth and teaching them about each department and all the requirements needed to work at those departments.

The event was hosted under the tag line ‘RIETGAT SAPS EXPO2024’ to show the community of Soshanguve especially in Jukulyn and areas around Jukulyn that the South African Police Service cares about their community and want to build a better future for the community.

Warrant officer Johan van Dyk Communication Coordinator of the South African Police Service, explained, “Rietgat police in collaboration with stakeholders arranged this career expo for the students in the areas of Rietgat, Jukulyn and Soshanguve, with limited resources the opportunities for students to go out and get proper information on making choice on their careers,”

He further stated that this program  is not the last event to be hosted and is very hopefully the will be more events of such kind coming to the area of Soshanguve.

Officer Willemse of the South African Police Service explains his duties as a police officer, “My duty and functions are to rescue people that passed on, people  that drowned, went missing ,and we work specially with kids that went missing and we work very closely with the police divers as well.”

Hlakanipho Sibande, a student expressed his feelings, saying, “I am happy about this event because it shows that the police together with other departments cares about our future and careers.”

Among the notable features of the expo were the interactive sessions whereby students asked questions and got instant help on career choices. Each department had representatives who took their time to demonstrate the significance of their duties in a society and the processes that one needs to undertake to be in those professions. The SAPS also used the platform to create awareness about existing crime prevention strategies encouraging the young people to get involved in keeping their communities safe.

Mr. Minyuku one of the community leaders, shared his thoughts on the event, saying,  “This is amazing and its very good for grade 12 students to come here, and get some information  with all the departments, this is very good also for the community and thanks to all the departments that made this event possible.”

The district commissioner of Tshwane, Major-General Thine, encourages all learners to visit their local police stations for more information on pursuing a career in the South African Police Service.
