On 8 August 2024, Tshwane witnessed a significant law enforcement operation that resulted in the apprehension of 326 suspects. Under "Operation Shanela," this large-scale initiative, led by the Acting District Commissioner of Tshwane, Brigadier Moses Dladla, targeted high-crime areas within Rietgat and Soshanguve.
Operation Shanela was not just a routine law enforcement effort, it was a well-coordinated initiative involving multiple agencies and community groups. The operation's success saw the effectiveness of collaboration between the South African Police Service (SAPS), Home Affairs, Gauteng Traffic, Tshwane Metro Police, and Community Policing Forums.

The operation commenced early in the morning with a briefing where objectives and outcomes were outlined to the participating agencies. The activities included patrols in high-crime areas, compliance inspections, the search of premises and the crackdown on illegal alcohol sales.
Tshwane's Detective teams reported the arrest of 287 suspects, including 82 for gender-based violence, 2 for murder, 1 for attempted murder, 4 for armed robbery, and 4 for rape.
Three teams comprising of various departments, where formed and were deployed to crime hotspots in the two policing areas. Twenty-six undocumented immigrants were arrested and detained, pending deportation after legal processes are finalized.

In total, 963 individuals and 384 vehicles and 34 premises were searched. This resulted in the arrest of one person for possession of an unlicensed firearm and 13 rounds of ammunition. The firearm will be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether the weapon has been used in other criminal activities. Another individual was arrested for possession of illicit cigarettes, specifically 2,000 loose cigarettes. Ten suspects were arrested for possession and dealing in drugs when 52 Ziplock plastic bags and 3 shopping bags full of dagga was found in their possession.
Drugs Seized during the operation18 Liquor premises were inspected and searched with 7 outlets were closed and 1 045 717 ml of illicit liquor being confiscated for not being compliant with the liquor act. Furthermore, 963 traffic violation notices were issued, amounting to R118 750 in fines with 2 vehicles being discontinued for not complying with the Road Traffic Act.
