Operation Shanela: A major win for Tshwane’s crime fighting efforts

On The 15th of August 2024, operation Shanela was executed in Brooklyn and Garsfontein. The operation was led by Brigadier Moses Dladla, the acting district commissioner of Tshwane, it included various agencies and community groups such as, the Department of Home Affairs, Gauteng Traffic, Tshwane Metro Police, Community policing Forum and the South African Police Service which saw 362 suspects being arrested.

Tshwane detective teams arrested 286 suspects, involved in serious and violent crimes, 75 people were arrested for gender-based violence, 1 for murder, 6 for attempted murder, 11 for armed robbery, and 5 for rape.

The activities of this operation included patrols in high-crime areas, compliance inspections, the search of premises and the crackdown on illegal alcohol sale.

The operation also saw 73 undocumented immigrants being arrested and detained and soon to be deported to their respected countries after all the legal processes get finalized. In total, they are 822 individuals, 45 premises where searched, 587 vehicles with 23 vehicles tested to ensure that they were not stolen.

Three suspects were arrested for possession of and dealing drugs that included, Heroin, Crystal meth and dagga with R1010 cash was found in their possession. Two liquor premises were inspected and fined for not being compliant with the liquor act.

 They further issued 177 traffic violations amounting to R92 100 in fines. Brigadier Dladla thanked all members who were involved in the operation as it was a success.
